Campaigns For Change @ Citizens Advice Sefton

Citizens Advice "Spot the Scam" Survey

Citizens Advice Sefton recently took part in a national survey to find out residents' fears/worries about scamming in Sefton. This is part of an ongoing project with Sefton Trading Standards and Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to protect vulnerable citizens from doorstep miss-selling, telephone scams etc.

The results for Sefton (Bootle through to Southport) showed that "winner" was "Switching" (voted for by more than 50% of those surveyed) which of course includes all forms of selling/miss-selling of power and mobile phone contracts. This result confirms what we are regularly seeing in consultations with clients who call in to our bureaux in Bootle, Formby, Maghull and Southport with billing/debt problems with the Utilities companies, (mainly Scottish Power, and N-power).

Despite what has been claimed by the Minister, it seems clear that contracts, and agreements of the utilities companies need to be much more transparent and simplified, and that the call centre operations require better and more staff training in handling customer complaints arising from the problems that arise when customers actually "switch" providers.

Support Citizens Advice by lobbying the Government to oppose the cuts in legal aid proposed in the Sentencing & Legal Aid Bill currently going though Parliament. The Bill proposes to reduce the scope of legal aid for debt and welfare benefit appeals and reviews, as this will affect many thousands of people who are being denied their entitlement to benefits by Government offices, and only succeed in gaining their entitlement by successful appealing to the tribunal service. Most affected are those who are disabled or unable to work due to illness.

Without the advice and help provided by organizations such as Citizens Advice, which is funded by Community Legal Services, these claimants would be far less likely to gain their entitlements.

Please support the e-petition on the directgov website.

It can be found here

Thank you

Justice For All Campaign

We are campaigning for free legal advice - because your rights matter.

Citizens Advice is playing a leading role in Justice for All, the campaign to ensure everyone is treated fairly under the law, no matter who they are, how much money they have or where they live.

Free, independent advice and representation on legal matters is essential to achieve justice for all.

Many people will be cut off from the help they need as multiple funding streams to CAB, Law Centres and other independent advice agencies are being cut at the same time. Over half a million people will lose out on advice through cuts to legal aid alone, and local authority support is also under threat in many areas.

Thousands have already joined the Justice for All campaign - including leading charities, advice and legal organisations, trade unions, community groups, politicians and members of the public.
